What is Your Interest?

in Get Organized

If you want to earn extra income online my first suggestion is to find something that interests you. Much like my friend Margot who has set up the BANS shoe site and a handbag site, it works for her because that is what she is passionate about. She loves shoes and purses. She knows something about shoes and purses. (I have looked in her closet!)

If there is one thing that really puts me off with online income programs, it is that the gurus are always saying that you can make money with their program. And, people buy the programs and the gurus make money. That’s their passion.

However, for those of us who want to earn a little extra income, we need to find our own passions, our own areas of interest and expertise. And, yes! There is room for everyone online to follow his or her area of interest. I have a friend who is quite knowledgeable in a particular area, but won’t pursue it online because he has seen about ten sites that do the same thing he wanted to do.  He said to me that he wouldn’t have done it the same way perhaps, but still there are at least ten (probably hundreds more he hasn’t seen) sites that cover his favorite topic.  Well, with that attitude I say let’s all just shut down.

There are millions upon millions upon millions of sites that cover a single topic.  For example, I have a friend who is decidedly liberal who writes a blog (BernieHund:  Political Watchdog).  There are thousands of liberal bloggers on the internet.  Does that mean she doesn’t have anything to say?  Does that mean she doesn’t have anything to add?  No way!  The site is about seven months old and already she has good traffic and lots of subscribers.  She has done no advertising.  She just writes about the issues that interest her.  It took a couple of months for the site to get noticed, but now she is enjoying several thousand readers each month.  That’s not a million hits a day, but it is a start.  She is making a little money from her ads and she loves what she does.  On the Internet there is always room for one more.

My friend Margot decided to start a blog that tells about all the BANS sites she and her friends and some online friends have built.  (We Search – You Save)  It has become an index of stores!  Well, at first the only subscribers were those who had built the stores.  Now, there are about 5 times as many subscribers as store owners.  She didn’t start the site for other people to read.  She actually started it for herself to keep up with stores designed and created by her friends.  Her friends subscribed, and now other shoppers are subscribing.

It is most important that you find your area of interest!  Most of us have a job.  And, most of us don’t love getting up and going to work.  We do it for the money.  So, my best suggestion is that if you are thinking about earning a little extra money online, you do the smart thing… find something you love to talk about, something you enjoy, and something that you can express clearly and simply enough that others will become interested.  Why start a second job that makes you no happier than the day job?

For some, online work will become their main source of income.  I do have a friend who has already quit his day job and is living (very well) off his online income.  While the income is important, especially if you quit your regular job, why not create a job that makes you happy?

Before you begin… find your passion!  Find a topic that makes you happy, something you will look forward to doing each day.  And, whatever your passion, there is enough room on the Internet for you!
